Wirelessguys green technology offers viable solution to rural clients

CUSTOMER: 

 

For years, a local book publishing company located in the rural hills of Santa Paula, CA was plagued with little to no cell phone or television reception and only dial-up internet service available to them.

 

According to the owner, Mike, when his friends bragged about their DSL service, signed up with a company only to find out that it was not available in his remote location.  His next endeavor was satellite television, later followed by satellite internet when upload/download capabilities became available.  Although satellite service is often spotty and inherently affected by weather conditions with a limited amount of throughput, it was still faster than his current dial-up scenario.  Business class dishes were installed on his property but Mike soon found that latency issues made satellite internet service problematic.  His business requires the transfer of large files overseas for printing.  The transfers often took up to ten hours due to dropped signals so it was not only time consuming but also very frustrating.  Mike limped along with satellite coverage for ten years with his satellite connection and then finally began a comprehensive search for a viable alternative.  A representative from Cisco Systems referred him to CEO, Steven Williams at WirelessGuys. BUSINESS CHALLENGE:

 

Bringing wireless network access to remote sites is always tricky.  Reaching remote rural customers with a reliable, high-speed internet access generally is an expensive proposition for both wireless service providers (WISPs) and for the end user. Not always the cases as these challenges are not unusual for WirelessGuys, a company that specializes in the design, installation, integration and support of wireless networks.

 

The current predicament involved several issues: eliminating dial-up service in the main house, providing WiFi connectivity between the house and the warehouse/design studio (approximately 2 miles apart and over a hill) and ensuring sufficient throughput for use with iPhones and iMacs.  An additional factor was the inaccessibility of an electric power source to the access relay point.  The property is around a bend and in a valley without line of sight (LOS) between the two buildings.  Underground conduits on the property are too far apart for an effective Ethernet connection and fiber optic was determined to be too costly.  Prior attempts at wireless networking provided less than adequate results.  A wireless router was initially installed in a utility room, but distance resulted in dropped signals.  Conflicts between additionally added routers did not improve the situation and wireless internet service in the house was abandoned in favor less a desirable wired capability.  Satellite wireless service continued in the studio only.

 

 

SOLUTION

 

 

In typical WirelessGuys fashion, engineers and technicians from various company divisions including HomeFi, iWG and Green Wireless Solutions, conferred to design a viable solution for Mike’s specific situation. 

 

The WG Green Wireless Solutions Division provides eco-friendly networking options and solutions that reduce the carbon footprint by employing renewable energy like solar and wind power.  The remote location of the access relay point in this particular case eliminated the option of a conventional source of electricity.  Rather than installing an enclosed gas generator which is fairly dangerous, not environmentally friendly, and is definitely more difficult to manage, a relay link was installed with redundant sources of energy (solar and wind) to power the battery.  As battery energy is used, the supply is replenished with which ever source is available, alternating seamlessly between the two green sources.

 

WirelessGuys’ HomeFi division offers high-quality and cost effective turnkey solutions for a variety of residential wireless scenarios.  The iWG division focuses on everything Apple, i.e., iPhone, iPad, iPod, etc.  Both the HomeFi and iWG divisions collaborated on the solution to provide WiFi service to the client’s residence.  WirelessGuys opted to install a WiFi meshing technique which employs multiple proprietary radios with multiple antennas.  The uniqueness of this system is that the radios form a virtual mesh round the house.  This system insures uniform and strong coverage throughout the space, allowing lower power devices such as iMacs and iPhones to operate effectively by traveling a shorter distance for a signal.  One of the most valuable benefits of the WG HomeFi turnkey system is that it allows remote monitoring by WirelessGuys.

 

Relay antennas were installed to provide wireless communication between the house and the studio and one of the greatest benefits to the family is that they now can receive and make cell phone calls from inside their home. With the assistance of a microcell located in the kitchen, the client is no longer a slave to his landline for communication.  This solution was now an option because of the green powered access point on the hill and so the end result is now cell phone connectivity is available inside and outside the residence which is a tremendous upgrade. 

 

 

SUCCESS

 

 

WirelessGuys helped Mike get full coverage in and outside of his residence. “I can walk outside and I can go up the hill behind the house (300-500 feet) and I still get a connection on my iPhone!  Or, I can walk out to my front yard and go out into the field and I can still get connection.  So, now I am free to roam and I am no longer tied to the spot where I had coverage before. I’ve learned that I can now walk around with my iPhone in my pocket because I can get emails or a Skype call on my iPhone.  I feel like people can find me easily and I’m finally very accessible.”

 

Mike described his experience with WirelessGuys as extremely positive.  His wireless internet service is currently ten times faster than his previous dial-up or satellite solutions. He states, it’s fantastic! I don’t have the latency now so I’m able to upload some pretty large files which previously took ten hours to transfer and can now be transferred within an hour. This has improved his business efficiency, giving him back at least 20% of my day.

 

 

THE GREEN SOLUTION

 

Mike stated that it is summertime now and the skies are clear most of the time, the solar/wind powered AP battery appears healthy and at full charge without any lapse of coverage.  However, he stated he is curious to see what will happen in terms of his battery backup time when he starts getting some rainy weather next winter.  “That’s when the wind generator is going to kick in which is perfect in this area because we get a lot wind and when I have a really strong windy day, I’ll imagine I will still be maintaining a good battery charge.”  He realizes that it will be a learning experience and that he may find some obstacles to overcome in the technology used.  “I am very confident that WirelessGuys will be positioned to handle any potential limitations we may discover”.

 

Mike discussed his experiences with several of the WirelessGuys personnel. He stated that speaking with WG’s Senior Engineer, Vlad, is always exciting to do because he can feel Vlad’s brain power coming over the phone when they are talking and his follow up and attention to detail is incredible.  Lawrence, a specialist in wireless meshing technology assisted with some of the network performance when needed.  Lawrence knows these operating systems like I haven’t seen in a long time. Mike also praised CEO, Steve Williams for his ethical and responsible salesmanship, noting that Steve put a lot of time into determining his needs and his budget.  A commitment had to be made on the infrastructure and Steve helped me to understand the solution and made me feel good about it and it worked out really well. It was very beneficial to our home and the property.

 

He also noted the follow-up and customer service by WirelessGuys to be stellar.  During a follow-up call from Steve through Skype, he mentioned that one of his antennas had gone down for a few hours and instead of simply attempting to offer a sales pitch for additional equipment, Steve researched the problem and solved the issue very quickly. That kind of follow-up and support is amazing and the fact that WirelessGuys has the ability to actually access your equipment from anywhere and to dig down the problem remotely is pretty cool.  The support was fantastic.

 

Mike stated that WirelessGuys has very talented and cohesive team that helped him work out a challenge that he could not solve himself.
